Roots and Routes
Presented by Mamal Kianipour and Sheida Collective, Roots and Routes is an avant-garde, multidisciplinary performance exploring the immigrant experience through world and electronic music in addition dance. Based in Innsbruck, Austria, Mamal Kianipour was born and raised in Tehran, Iran, where he lived until his mid-twenties. In 2016, he was compelled to leave everything behind and journey to Europe as a refugee, ultimately achieving Austrian citizenship in summer 2024. His path from Tehran to Tyrol is woven into this project, bringing scenes from his personal journey to the stage.
This innovative performance delves into the stages of immigration, reflecting experiences of resilience, transformation, and belonging. Mamal’s deep connection to the emotional roots of music and dance informs not only this work but every art project he undertakes and even his daily life. Music by Asura from Ultimate Sound and Hamze Taheri as Kariz Band combines with choreography by Mingfu Guo and dancers Olivia Swintek, Iliano Tomasetto, and Jung-Ching Cheng, creating a unique artistic lens through which the audience can explore themes of identity and adaptation.
